Promoter Holding
← All Terms

Promoters are the founders or controlling group of a company — often a family, in many Indian businesses. Promoter Holding is simply what percentage of total shares they still hold. High and stable promoter holding is often (though not always) seen as a positive signal: it means the people running the company have significant personal wealth tied up in its success, aligning their incentives with other shareholders. A declining promoter holding trend over time can be worth investigating — it might be routine (funding another venture) or it might signal reduced confidence, and it's worth checking which. Some large, professionally-run companies (notably many private banks) have very low or zero promoter holding entirely, which isn't inherently bad — it just means governance relies more heavily on institutional oversight than founder alignment.

In practice: HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank both show 0% promoter holding — unusual by Indian standards, but normal for banks of this scale, where regulation and institutional ownership (FII/DII at ~85-90%) provide the oversight instead.
